<Spot 1> Sukugetsu-tei Pavilion
The Sukugetsu-tei Pavilion, said to have been built in the late 17th century, was named after a line in a Chinese poem from the Tang Dynasty: “If you scoop up the water, you will find the moon in your hand. As the name implies, when you sit on the lowered floor, you feel as if you could reach out and touch the surface of the lake from a boat. It is the largest teahouse-style building in the park, so it is also called the “Grand Teahouse,” and successive feudal lords loved this building.
<Spot 2> Bastore Bridge
Bastoretto Bridge in Ritsurin Park is the largest of the 15 bridges in the park. Named for the way the bowing moon casts its shadow on the lake, it is a beautifully curved, large circular bridge. Visitors can see colorful Nishikigoi carp dancing in the water.
<Spot 3> Japanese Boat
For the easiest way to enjoy the charms of the garden, take a ride on the “Chishu-maru” and “Geishun-maru” Japanese-style boats that float around the 7,890-square-meter Minamiko Lake. The view of the “Bastoretsu Bridge,” which resembles a half-moon reflected on the surface of the lake, from the water is exceptionally beautiful. In spring, you will pass by Tokensho, where heart-shaped azaleas bloom, and in fall, you will approach Fugan, where many maple trees are planted, and enjoy the seasonal beauty of the garden, which is said to have been enjoyed by successive lords of the Takamatsu Matsudaira family.
